New GE Policy in effect!

In the past, you could choose courses from any department to satisfy Advanced GE (now officially "SJSU Studies") areas R, S, and V.

A new policy is in effect that requires that "students who begin continuous enrollment at a CCC or a CSU in Fall 2005" must satisfy areas R, S, and V with courses taken "from three different departments or distinct academic units".

(Here's the current description of the requirements, which I took from this 57 page document about Fall 2005 Registration instructions, policies, and procedures. Here are the five pages from that document that talk all about GE.)

What does this new policy mean for you?

If you are NOT beginning continuous enrollment this term, you don't have to worry about the new policy. You can still use the old requirements, which let you pick whichever classes you want to fulfill the three advanced GE areas.

If you ARE beginning continuous enrollment this term, you should make sure that you are not using another Philosophy course to fill an Advanced GE. (For example, if you are a Business major, and you are using PHIL 186, which is required for your major, to fulfill Area S, you won't be able to use Phil 160 to fulfill Area R. But this only applies if you start continuous enrollment Fall 2005 or later!)

If you are not sure whether you count as starting continuous enrollment Fall 2005 or later, it would be a very good idea to make an appointment with a GE advisor and/or a major advisor to clarify your status! You don't want to go to the trouble of taking a course and find out at the end that it won't fulfill the requirements you thought it would!
